Following the sharp reductions in government health spending which have taken place in most developing countries, access to health services now has to be paid for. It is therefore impossible for rural people to finance health care costs without jeopardizing their future. A disease that looks benign at first can take a dramatic turn.
Faced with these situations Louvain Coopération au Développement assures the promotion and the development of health mutual associations which allow risk sharing between members. In exchange for the payment of a membership fee and an annual fee, defined according to individual capacity, each member has access to the health facilities at any moment.
"In 2001, my daughter was ill. It was only in 2006, when she was cured, that I was able to repay my debts and to look ahead.” Since then this mother pays an annual fee to the health mutual association which guarantees access to health care at a lesser cost.
